Nowadays,Culture shock has become a hot phrase in globalization. The related issues such as how culture shock manifests its self, how expatriate employees overcome culture shock have been widely talked about.

  本文将阐述文化冲击的定义,以及文化冲击的体现方式。这包括受到文化冲击的人必须经历的五个阶段。因此,本文将具体介绍这五个阶段是什么,以及如何利用其特殊的优点体现出文化冲击。

This essay will demonstrate the definition of Culture Shock, how Culture Shock manifests itself. The person who suffer Culture Shock must have experience the five stages. Therefore, this essay will introduce what Five stages is, and how to use its special merit to manifest Culture Shock.

Further more, with the development of globalization, employees work on broad are universal. Because of this question, this essay always demonstrate how organization minimize effects of it for their expatriate employees in order to help them adapt to living and working in the new culture. A specific but concise conclusion will be given at the end of this essay.

Kalvero Oberg a anthropologist used the term "culture shock" for the first time in 1954 during a speech to the Woman's Club of Rio de Janero. Oberg (1960) pointed out that Culture shock is a reaction on anxiety that resulting from losing all familiar signs, customers and symbols of social association . It implies that people may feel unpleasant surprise or shock when they experience a new culture. The reaction manifests on Feelings of loneliness, sadness and homesickness; Difficulty on sleeping; Loss of appetite and Unwillingness to interact with others. Again, "Culture Shock" describes the impact of moving from a familiar culture to one which is unfamiliar. It is an experience described by people who have travel led abroad to work, live or study; it can be felt to a certain extent even when people go abroad on holiday. It includes the shock of a new environment, meet large number of new people and learn different things in different country. It also includes the shock of being separated from the important people in lives, maybe family, friends, colleagues, and teachers. When familiar sights, sounds, smells or tastes are no longer appear, people can miss them very much. If people are tired when they arrive at a new surrounding, they will feel upset and out of all proportion to their real significance (Oberg, 1960). However, with time gone, people have new understanding on Culture Shock. Some researchers have tried to improve and expand Oberg’s definition of Culture Shock.”

Bock (1970) is a typical representative described that “Culture Shock” as a primarily emotional reaction is not a nature to require people follow other’s attitudes, beliefs, values or even traditions. This is a common phenomenon for people: when living environment has changed so that the original behaviors changed from “usual” to “unusual”. Either lack of the familiarity with the physical setting or the social environment can produce this kind of effect. All the writers in this field repeat a theme that: “Culture Shock” is a uncertain stress reaction , for this reason “Culture Shock” is difficult to control or forecast. Hence, a people can avoid the feeling on anxious or confused until he or she has time to develop a new series of recognised conceptions to understand and act out the measurable behaviors.
