汉英“或然”类副词性关联词语比较研究

时间:2016-10-03 15:58来源:硕士论文作者:lgg 点击:
本文是英语语言学论文,本文主要对汉英“或然”类副词性关联词语:“也许”,“或许”,“兴许”,“可能”和“大概”;probably, perhaps,possibly,likely 和 maybe 进行对比研究。
Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Objective of the Research
Adverb is a complicated and controversial category both in Chinese and Englishall through. In other words, there comes no consensus with regard to its definition, grammatical features, distributional principles and even classifications of adverb, etc.In the process of probing into an in-depth study on adverb, a large quantity of adverbswith the function of conjunction come into sight. In fact, there exists a kind ofcontinuum (transitional zone) between the typical conjunction and the typical adverb. And this type of adverb modifying predicates or sentences, connecting words, phrases, sentences, and even textures, can be called as “adverbial conjunctions”.Yuan Surong (2013: 38) summarizes 121 Chinese adverbial conjunctions and190 English adverbial conjunctions. The present study focuses on 5 typical adverbialconjunctions denoting the meaning of speculation with uncertainty both in Chinese(“也许”,“或许”,“兴许”,“可能”,“大概”) and in English (probably, perhaps, maybe, likely, possibly) respectively. These 5 pairs of equivalents1 share commonfeatures not only in the semantic level, expressing one’s subjective uncertainty andspeculation towards objective facts, but also in the syntactic, and pragmatic aspects.Hence, based on the contextual analysis of data from COCA2 and CCL3, thisthesis attempts to figure out similarities and differences in these 10 words from theperspective of functional linguistics, seek for their deep structures and relationshipwith other parts of speech, and summarize some regular patterns or basic rules deepinside these 2 languages.

1.2 Significance of the Research
Studying on probable adverbial conjunctions has a great significance both intheory and practice. Firstly, the development of study on adverb has long been nearlya state of stagnation. It yet remains a new topic with few marked achievement, whichis one of the most difficult and significant subjects for research. As Lv Shuxiang(1979) points out in his book Issues on Chinese Grammatical Analyses that adverb, itself a hodgepodge, needs a clear classification inside. As for English, Quirk et al.(1985: 438) also propose that English adverbs are the most ambiguous and confusingpart of speech, as their great heterogeneity. In this sense, the study for one specificsub-branch of adverb according to one basic standard for classification, isundoubtedly of great significance to researches of modern Chinese and Englishadverbs.Secondly, these 10 adverbial conjunctions fall into different categories withindifferent languages. Through the comparative study between the two, we could get adetailed description and analysis for mood and modal system in both sides. Eventhough there have been various related papers, thesis and monographs talking aboutone or two or more of adverbs with probabilistic meaning, their research just takemore attention to words within the same language rather than others. Therefore, thisessay provides a comprehensive study on the similarities and differences both inChinese and English, not just one single and isolated linguistic context, which is to thebenefit of foreign language teaching and researches for translation.

Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Previous Studies on Adverbial Conjunctions
Adverbial conjunction, particularly refers to adverbs and adverbial expressionsfunctioning as linking words in a sentence of two or more clauses or discourses. Itplays a role of cohesive ties between clauses, sentences, and linguistic units (YuanSurong 2013). They cannot be categorized as one single part of speech paralleled asadjective, preposition, conjunction and noun, but rather a general category withspecific function. In short, adverbial conjunction composes a particular category withits correlative function. As we have mentioned previously, there exists a continuum between adverb andconjunction, which is actually the transitional zone where adverbial conjunctionlocates. It is intuitively illustrated in the figure below.Besides possessing the essence of typical adverb, and acting as the adverbialmodifier and modifying verbs, adjectives and adverbs, etc., in fact, adverbialconjunctions are relatively closer to the conjunctions. It is also worth mentioning thatadverbial conjunctions have combining features, both in modifying and connectivefunction.

2.2 Previous Studies on “也许”, “或许”, “兴许”, “可能”, “大概” andprobably, perhaps, maybe, likely, possibly
No matter how these two groups of words are defined, classified in differentlanguages, there indeed exists something intrinsic and common in themselves.Chinese academics tend to identify those words as modal adverbs, while most Englishscholars are inclined to associate this type of words with the system of modality. In aword, probable adverbial conjunctions help correctly and appropriately express themood in conversations as well as connecting the preceding with the following context. While talking about this group of words in Chinese, mood system in Chinesegrammar will inevitably be involved. Modal particles and Mood System (Qi Huyang2002), has been the sole domestic monograph on Chinese modal particles and moodsystem up to now. Based on existing researches, Qi (2002: 17) puts forth his owndefinition of modal category: Mood is a kind of grammatical form expressing one’ssubjective consciousness towards a sentence or a proposition. He classifies the moodsystem by attitudes or emotions of the speaker towards a conversation, which can becalled as the mood of psychokinesis. And one of its subcategories, the mood ofpossibility has been divided into necessary, and probable mood, mainly consisting ofauxiliary “可能”, modal adverbs “大概”, and “也许” etc. Correspondingly, Halliday(2004: 49) confines probably, possible, perhaps and maybe to the type of probabilityin modal adjuncts. So according to this statement, we define this sort of words asprobable adverbial conjunctions both in Chinese and English.

Chapter 5 Pragmatic Functions of Probable AdverbialConjunctions in Chinese and English

When the semantic research of a language is concerned, it will inevitably involveissues on practical uses and contexts of this particular language, which is actually theessence of its pragmatic function, the topic of this chapter. In accordance with the ideaof Hu Yushu and Fan Xiao (1985: 7-15) the syntactic and semantic componentsconstitute the inner layer of language and form facts or events with objectivity, whilethe pragmatic elements construct the outer layer with subjectivity in comparison.Pragmatics, as an independent discipline founded and developed in 1970s,mainly studies the particular discourse in particular circumstances, especially how tounderstand and apply languages under different linguistic communicativeenvironments. It coincides with Levinson’s (1983: 9) definition that pragmatics is thestudy of those relations between language and context that are grammaticalized, orencoded in the structure of a language. In the meantime, functional linguists probeinto linguistic functions, lingual, social and cultural interrelationships, interpret forlinguistic applications from different perspectives, and propose some related theoriesas well, all of which promote the development of pragmatics on the other hand.Browsing through several canonical documents, we find that the researchcontents of pragmatics mainly include deixis, presupposition, conventionalimplicature, speech acts, conversational structure, etc (Levinson 1983; Mey 2001; SuoZhenyu 2000; Jiang Wangqi 2003). Therefore, combined with its specific applicationin communications, pragmatic functions of probable adverbial conjunctions will belisted and illustrated in this section, which respectively are information focus markingfunction, discourse marking function, emphatic and subjectivisation function.

Conclusion

Adverbial conjunction is a unique part of speech with the connective function indiscourse, which is although attributed into the category of adverbs. Probableadverbial conjunctions with a variety of roles, serve as an adverbial on the layer ofsyntax, conjunction words in stretches of texts--- phrases, sentences, paragraphs orlonger on the layer of semantics, modality of probability expressing the emotionalattitude with uncertainty on the layer of pragmatics, which directly influences theprevious two, both grammatical and textual function. Hence, on the basis ofpredecessors’ study and research, this thesis first defines the probable adverbialconjunction and its judging standard, then makes an investigation for the syntactic, semantic features, pragmatic and textual functions of these words in both languages. With the aid of authentic materials collected from CCL and COCA, theoretical, quantitative and qualitative research, we attempt to find out and summarize thosesimilarities and dissimilarities between Chinese and English probable adverbialconjunctions in four aspects having been previous mentioned, and make a reasonableexplanation from the perspective of functional linguistics.
