Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
With the rapid development and widespread of computer and Internet, a new digital era has come and deepened into all areas of people's daily life. This era has also greatly influenced people's communication. More and more people look for information, voice their opinions and communicate with people they know and  they  do  not  know  on  line.  Internet,  together  with  newspapers,  radios  and  TM  has  become  a  new platform for mass communication, and it has been called "the fourth medium'' on line. People on line are called "netizens". With the global scale of network and intensity of its use, a new language form-netspeak, has come into being. Netspeak,  generally  speaking, has  its broad and narrow  senses.  According to  Zhou  Hongbo's idea  in the  preface.  for  Chinese  Netspeak  Dictionary  (2001),  netspeak  can  be  divided  into  three  types.  Firstly, netspeak refers to the network-related terminologies, such as hardware, software, mouse, the virus, firewall, LAN,WAN,browser,  etc.  Secondly,  netspeak  refers  to  network-related  special  language,  such  as ``information  highway”,  "the  fourth  medium",  "virtual  world"  and  so  on.Thirdly,  netspeak  refers  to common terms and symbols used in chat rooms and BBS   by the Internet users, such as“大虾”“美眉”,“斑竹”,“恐龙”,“菜鸟”,“打铁”,“酒屋”,“漂漂”,“酱紫”"886" "3ku"“:一 D,,,“:一),,
and so on. In narrow sense, netspeak refers to the typical and new words and expressions commonly used in chat rooms and BBS (Bulletin Board System)for communication. This kind of language is typed by the keys on the  keyboard,  and  embodies  itself  on  the  screen  of  computer.  It  is  created  by  the  Internet  users  for  the convenient input ways, humorous and creative effects. This paper will discuss this kind of language.

1.2 Significance of the Study
Netspeak becomes popular rapidly in casual in cyberspace, and extends to the people in the real world.  The process will inevitably exist some inherent law or mechanism that makes it contain certain significance of network language being accepted, used and continue to spread. To make a study of the renewable logic and mechanism of Netspeak in chinese and english from semiotic perspective is very meaningful. First, the research on Netspeak is very necessary. According to David Crystal (2001), Netspeak is the development of millennial significance and it is a new medium of linguistic communication that does not arrive  very  often  in the history  of  the human race.  Crystal  (2001) also shows  that  “if the  Internet is  a revolution, therefore, it is likely to be a new linguistic revolution”. Therefore, making a research on such a linguistic  topic  is  helpful  to  know  the  nature  of  netspeak  and  language  development  objectively  and correctly.  Second, language is the carrier of culture and culture transmit through language. The research on the relationship between language and culture is not only beneficial to broaden the scope of human knowledge, but  also  to  enrich  cultural  linguistics  and  researches.  There  are  large  differences  between  Chinese  and western culture, which will deeply affect language users. As English major, it is necessary for the author to concentrate on English netspeak. Comparative and contrastive study of the vocabulary in the two netspeaks is a push to linguistic research as well as the promotion to the national culture research, which will show its importance  in  both  pragmatic  and  socio-linguistic  dimensions.  It  is  one  of  the  missions  and  the responsibilities for language researchers to make further study on netspeak.

Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 The Definition of Netspeak
Since  the  terms  scholars  have  used  in  their  researches  are  different,  it  is  necessary  to  clarify  the alternatives  to  netspeak. As  a  matter  of  fact,  the  term  "netspeak"  has  not  yet  been  widely  accepted  in  the linguistic   field.   Scholars   use   different terms   in their studies   of this   linguistic phenomenon. It is called  "netspeak"  by  David  Crystal  (2001)  and  "internet  slang"  by  Ryan  Jones  (2006).  In  the  website  it appears as "net lingo" and "net slang". In the book Language and the Internet, David Crystal said that if the Internet is a revolution then it is likely  a  revolution  about  language.  He  gives  netspeak  a  definition  as  follows:  Netspeak  is  a  type  of language displaying features that are unique to the Internet, and encountered in email, chat groups, virtual worlds  and  World  Wide  Web  arising  out  of  its  character  as  a  medium,  which  is  electronic,  global  and interactive (Crystal, 2001, 18-19). As  a  developing  phenomenon,  netspeak  has  attracted  the  attention  of  a  lot  of  scholars. The  research about  it  has been  in  the  ascendant. While  until  now,  there  is  no  universally  accepted  linguistic  definition about  netspeak.  Usually  there  have  existed  several  explanations  to  netspeak.  According  to  preface  of Chinese  Netspeak  Dictionary  written  by  Yu  Genyuan,  netspeak  can  be  divided  into  three  categories:  the first  one  is  the  technical  terms  are  related  to  computer  science  and  network  technology,  such  as  mouse, hardware, software, virus, online,chat-room, etc. The second is the special words and phrases are related to the  Internet  culture,  for  example,  netizen,  netbar,  hacker,  message,  E-commerce,  virtual  world,  etc.  The third one is a collection of words, idioms, slang, terms, abbreviations and acronyms, smilies and emoticons that are used in chat room and BBS communication. (2001). Based  on  previous  studies  of  netspeak,  Yu  Miao,  a  postgraduate  student  of  School  of  International Studies,  University  of  International Business and  Economics, divides  it  into  three categories in her  thesis New Linguistic Revolution Linguistic Features of Netspeak from the Perspective of Lexicology, Semantics and Pragmatics: a new language, a set of conventions and a collection of  idioms, slang and abbreviations.

2.2 Netspeak Study Abroad
Comparatively  speaking,  the  study  on  Netspeak  began  earlier  abroad.  In  1997,  a  conference  about “Internet  and  Language”  was  held  by  the  World  Language  Research  and  Resource  Centre  of  Hartford University.  Many  scholars  including  linguists  with  international  reputation  were  invited  to  discuss  the status of  English,  Netspeak,  education by  the  Internet and so  on.  After six  years, another  Netspeak-study meeting  was  held  in  Spain.  These  two  meetings  are  the  landmarks  of  research  on  Netspeak  in  linguistic circle. However, most articles about Netspeak only simply introduce the neologisms of Netspeak, while the systematic linguistic analysis has been done quite little in this field. David Crystal can be absolutely considered one of the world’s leading authorities on language and the editor of Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language, who in 2001 published a book titled Language and  the  Internet,  which  made  remarkable  accomplishment  in  Netspeak  research.  In  this  book,  Crystal pointed  out  the  most  creative  group  in  society  is  the  Netspeak  users  who  adapt  their  languages  to  the Internet  for  a  variety  of  reasons  and  purposes.  He  also  noted  that  “there  are  several  major  differences between  Netspeak  and  face-to-face  communication,  even  in  those  electronic  situations  which  are  most speech-like” (Crystal, 2006: 32). Crystal (2001) has made an argument that Netspeak is going to change the way we think about language in a fundamental way, because it is a linguistic singularity—a genuine new medium. He also goes deep into the  impact that the Internet is exerting on. Of course, he admits there are limitations  in  both  quantity  and  quality,  but  this  book  all  in  all  is  the  representative  of  Netspeak  study abroad. Essentially,  Netspeak  not  only  takes  place  in  English-speaking  world  but  on  a  global  scale.  At  the beginning, people noticed that the language used for online information exchange carried features different from  our  daily  used  language  (Crystal,  2006:31),  while  nowadays  people  turn  their  focus  on  computer mediated  relationship  (Ynm  and  Hara,  2005)  or  blog  and  privacy  issues  (Kelleher  and  Miller, 2006).However, it is obvious that the Internet has brought many net neologisms and new expressions to the world.

Chapter 5 Results and Discussion

5.1 Characteristics and Categories of Netspeak Regeneration
Analysis  and  research  on  the  Netspeak  must  first  understand  the  generation  and  characteristics  of Netspeak,  forming  reasons  of  Netspeak  determine  the  characteristics  of  Netspeak,  only  to  understand  its causes and characteristics of network to determine the influence of Netspeak, can also pass the influence to determine  the  value  of  Netspeak,  on  this  basis  to  rational  utilization  of  Netspeak,  guide  the  healthy development of the Netspeak. Communication  is  the  most  main  function  of  Netspeak,  ignore  this  function,  the  Netspeak  will  not survive. In  modern  life  where  there  is  information  explosion,  the  Netspeak  from  the  perspective  of  the characteristics of popular,is not showing outdated complex traits. Simplicity is one of the important reasons why  Netspeak  can  be  used  widely  in  the  communication  between  people  .We  can  clearly  feel  that,  no matter how convenient the development of science and technology makes the network communication, the efficiency of the network communication is not as high as face-to-face direct communication. It is obvious that  the  efficiency  in  which  early  people  used  the  keyboard  to  input  was  too  low  even  by  now  popular "We Chat" software to communicate by voice input is also difficult to show in the same language patterns efficiency as across the direct communication. So, the Netspeak must be simple enough to express enough complete information in the limited time.

Conclusion

Accompanying the emergence, netspeak used for information is widespread of Internet, netspeak has come  into  being.  Since  its  warmly  welcomed  by  a  large  amount  of  netizens  and  widely  exchanging  and communication  on  the  Internet.  It  has  many  distinctive  features  from  both  spoken  and  written  language, thus it is a "third medium."(David Crystal, 2006: 52) As a new language form, it has been widely used in the on-line environment and has attracted many linguistists' attention. Scholars have studied netspeak for its lexical  and  grammatical  characteristics,  rhetoric  devices,  pragmatic  significances  and  so  on,  but  little attention has been paid on the issue of its generation from the cognitive perspective. This paper attempts to explore its generating mechanism under the guidance of Professor Xu Shenghuan's Autonomy-dependency Analysis Framework (2007b). Based on a large amount of corpus and careful analysis, we have constructed a framework for the production mechanism of netspeak, which to some degree, is a derivation or adaptation of  Xu  Shenghuan's  Autonomy-dependency  Analysis  Framework.  By  this  framework,  the  issue  of  the production of netspeak has been solved. In this part, the  main findings, limitations and future study of this research will be concluded.
